The RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Provides you with an enjoyable and progressive way to learn to sail. Each Certificated Course Provides an opportunity to recognise your achievements.
We will run the course in small dinghies well suited to your size. The Stage 1 course provides you with there knowledge to assist in boat rigging and launching, being a crew, steering and tacking from reach to reach.By the end of the course you should have a basic understanding of how a boat sails and some basic experience of steering and boat handling.
Stage 2 takes you up to a more complete level involving rigging, launching and recovery, rope work, boat handling, capsize recovery, rules of the water and some other theory.
By the end of stage 2 you should be well on your way to being a confident small boat sailor. We have combined the Stage 1 and Stage 2 courses in order to maximise the learning range of each individual. Each course should take two days, however quite often individuals complete the Stage 1 syllabus very quickly. Using the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Syllabus and Logbook to track your progress we can “pick up where we left off” next time you come, signing off new knowledge as you learn.
We can provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids and splash tops, so you should be fully kitted out on the water. However if you have your own you may want to bring it.We ask that you bring some footwear that you don’t mind getting wet as well as some for wearing after you have changed. Also bring a towel, and some warm clothes for after we come off the water. Also a coat can be a good idea if it is cold and some suncream if the sun is out, as believe it or not it can get hot enough to burn here in Wales! We have excellent changing and shower facilities on site at Porth Eirias, there are also lockers that accept a £1 coin (and even give it back afterwards).
A packed lunch is a good idea, although it is a short walk/drive into town so it is possible to go to the shops.
