Sailing is a fantastic and diverse sport, with activities to suit everyone. The RYA National Sailing scheme has been designed to help you to enjoy whichever aspect appeals to you most.
The Level One Course is designed as a full weekend of learning to provide an introduction to sailing for novices. By the end of the course you will have a basic understanding of boat handling techniques and background knowledge. This will include wind awareness, knowledge of spars/foils and sail controls. Some rope work, practical knowledge of controlling speed, stopping and turning, launching and recovering.
Tuition is provided by our qualified dinghy instructors at no more than one instructor to 6
students. The course can be taught in a number of boats but we always try to get you in
more than one design to give you a taste of each from our Harley H12s to our RS Ventures.
After this course you will be able to come back to us and hire a boat (in the right
conditions). Then next step after a bit of practice is the Level 2 course which is widely
considered your “driving license for sailing.
We can provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids and splash tops so you should be fully kitted out on the water. We ask that you bring some footwear that you don’t mind getting wet as well as some for wearing after you have changed. Also bring a towel, and some warm clothes for when we come off the water. Also a coat can be a good idea if it is cold and some suncream if the sun is out, as believe it or not it can get hot enough to burn here in Wales! We have excellent changing and shower facilities on site at Porth Eirias, there are also lockers that accept a £1 coin (and even give it back afterwards)
A packed lunch is a good idea, although it is a short walk/drive into town so it is possible to go to the shops.
