Sailing is a fantastic and diverse sport, with activities to suit everyone. The RYA National Sailing Scheme has been designed to help you to enjoy whichever aspect appeals to you most. The Level 2 course is designed to take you to a level where you are capable of sailing a boat in light winds without an instructor.
Knowledge and ability are monitored on a continual basis. Students should be able to make decisions about sailing based on the weather conditions, and set their boats up to suit the conditions. The five essentials of good sailing are introduced which will allow self directed learning once the course is finished.
Tuition is provided by our qualified dinghy instructors at no more than one instructor to 6 students. The course can be taught in a number of boats but we always try to get you in more than one design to give you a taste of each from our Harley H12s to our RS Ventures.
After this course you will be able to come back to us and hire a boat (in the right conditions). Level 2 is widely considered your “driving licence for sailing” and will be accepted by most centres offering hire. We run evening racing as a chance to regularly get out and practice your new skills.
We can provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids and splash tops, so you should be fully kitted out on the water. We ask that you bring some footwear that you don’t mind getting wet as well as some for wearing after you have changed. Also bring a towel, and some warm clothes for after we come off the water. Also a coat can be a good idea if it is cold and some suncream when the sun is out, as believe it or not it can get hot enough to burn here in Wales! We have excellent changing and shower facilities on site at Porth Eirias, there are also lockers that accept a £1 coin (and even give it back afterwards)
A packed lunch is a good idea, although it is a short walk/drive into town so it is possible to go to the shops.
