RYA Intermediate Windsurfing Instructor

Thanks for your interest in the 4 day RYA Intermediate Windsurf Instructors course.  The course start time is 9.30am at the centre.

The centre will still be operating as normal during the course, so we will be working along side usual activities.

There is a lot of work to do on the course so we will be finishing around half five most nights. Punctuality is important and affects the course outcome greatly.


Eligibility for Intermediate non-planing instructors

  • Minimum age 16
  • Start windsurfing instructor
  • Intermediate certificates plus beach start and non-planing carve gybe
  • RYA Powerboat level 2 certificate
  • Valid RYA Recognised First Aid certificate
  • Evidence of 50 hours logged as a Start windsurfing instructor
  • Personal member of the RYA

Course Publications (not included in the course price)

Equipment / Things to bring:

  • Evidence of all course pre-requisites to be produced on Day 1 (certificates, etc)
  • Warm clothes and waterproof for outside onshore sessions
  • Flat soled shoes for simulator
  • Wetsuit, harness, etc
  • Buoyancy aid
  • A suitable board & rigs for both planing and non-planing conditions.

All candidates will be expected to prepare and deliver a short presentation on a topic (you’ll be informed separately what this is.) Further shorter impromptu topics may also be allocated. Please ensure this is ready to deliver for Day 1 onwards.

Prior to arrival it is essential to be properly prepared, which means being familiar with the “RYA Intermediate Coaching Notes” document (Free download from RYA website)

This will form the basis for the course content. Please either print or save a copy to file, so you have access to this throughout the course.

Course assessment will be based on candidates’ knowledge, sailing ability, coaching ability and ability to communicate effectively.

The most common comment in the feedback sheets is the regret that candidates had not fully prepared. Proper preparation is the key to a more relaxing and enjoyable course.

Successful candidates may gain “Non-Planing” or “Planing” Instructor Status, but must be personally qualified at least 1 level above their Instructor level.

i.e. An Intermediate Non Planing Instructor, must hold minimum of Intermediate Planing Certificate, plus clinics; an Intermediate Planing Instructor must hold minimum of Advanced Certificate, plus clinics.

Personal windsurfing assessments may be possible on the course.
